The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released preliminary statistics on retail trade in September: the provisional estimate of the total sales value was HK $29.6 billion, down 6.9% from the same month last year. The revised estimate of the total retail sales value in August was 10% lower than that of the same month last year.
Compared with the same period in 2023, the provisional estimate of the total retail sales value in the first nine months of this year fell by 7.6%.
In September, online sales accounted for 10.4% of the total retail sales value. The retail online sales value in this month is temporarily estimated at HK $3.1 billion, down 11.8% from the same month last year. The revised estimate of retail online sales value in August 2024 is 0.7% lower than that of the same month last year.
Compared with the same period in 2023, the total online sales value of the retail industry in the first nine months of this year is temporarily estimated to fall by 2%.
After deducting price changes during the period, the provisional estimate of total retail sales in September fell 8.7% compared with the same month last year.
